Crevasses are the result of the difference in speed developed in a glacier that advances through a valley. The sides of the glacier that come into contact with the sides of the valley move more slowly due to higher friction compared to the center of the glacier. This difference in speed results either in the creation of herringbone crevasses or multiple veins that resemble the patterns of marble.
